The weekend National League title fight game between the San Diego Padres and New York Mets was a cruel and punishing game for the Friars. The game was a decisive victory for the Padres with the Mets only scoring two points at the top of the eighth.

The Mets and Padres, two teams who met in last year’s wild-card round and spent the winter trying to buy a championship, felt like they were staring at a mirror playing against one another with identical 42-47 records entering Sunday’s game at Petco Park in San Diego. Neither team is having a good season and while A.J. Preller and the Padres front office haven’t given up on the possibility of reaching the postseason, it’s going to be a hard fight to make headway. A recent poll of fans indicated that the preference was for the Padres to be both buyers and sellers at the August trade deadline, getting rid of some pieces where the team could be strong while adding in at other spots.
