Comic-Con Human Trafficking Sting

Fourteen people were arrested and 10 sex trafficking victims rescued — one 16 years of age — at the ubiquitously known nerdfest, Comic-Con. The sting operation last week in San Diego, California involved both tactical surveillance as well as pragmatic execution. Conducted Thursday through Saturday, the operation saw law enforcement personnel posing as sex buyers to identify and contact potential trafficking victims and arrest their traffickers, according to the attorney general’s office. Officers also posted undercover ads soliciting sex in order to arrest buyers.

“Unfortunately, sex traffickers capitalize on large scale events such as Comic-Con to exploit their victims for profit,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement.

The operation was conducted by the multi-agency San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, composed of federal and state law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial offices.
