Former Trump Official Shot in Overnight Crime Spree


Mike Gill, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), was critically shot by a carjacker in Maryland on Monday. He was the first in a string of victims in a dusk to dawn crime spree. He is currently still in critical condition.

Gill held his position during the tenure of Donald Trump and acted as senior vice president of Common Securitization Solutions (CSS), a platform that administered the combined single-family MBS (Mortgage Backed Security) portfolio of both Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FHLMC) to issue a single security called the Uniform MBS.

He currently serves as the Senior Vice President for Capital Markets for the Housing Policy Council, a major trade association for the mortgage industry. He is a lawyer that is known for donating his time to the Archdiocesan Legal Network, offering pro-bono services for landlord/tenant matters, government entitlements, domestic relations issues, and employment issues.

The violent spree began when a man, identified as Artell Cunningham, shot a person inside a car around 5:45 p.m. Monday, on K Street Northwest, police said. The person inside the car collapsed onto the sidewalk and was rushed to the hospital. That man was identified as Mike Gill.

A timeline as the deadly crime spree unfolded, according to MPD and other law enforcement:

At 5:45 p.m. Monday, the suspect entered a parked vehicle and shot the driver in the 900 block of K Street Northwest, and fled on foot. Police said the victim is in critical condition. A family spokesperson has identified that victim as Mike Gill. Gill was on the D.C. Board of Elections until Jan. 2023. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President for Capital Markets for the Housing Policy Council. He’s a husband and father to three children.

Around 7:05 p.m., the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE but was unsuccessful.

Then around 7:17 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of 3rd Street and N Street NE after reports of a shooting. Police said the suspect shot a man and stole his 2016 gray Chrysler 200 with D.C. tags. MPD said the victim was later pronounced dead and the Chrysler 200 was recovered in Takoma Park overnight.

The victim was later identified by police as 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez Jr. Vasquez grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Police say the suspect then committed multiple other carjackings, including of a Toyota Camry, and then after discarding that vehicle carjacked a rideshare driver’s blue Nissan Rogue in University Park in Prince George’s County at 11:23 p.m. The University Park police chief says he hit the victim in the head with a gun, and then stole the Nissan. The victim was not seriously hurt per the chief.

Around 2:30 a.m. Maryland State Police say he shot the windshield of a trooper’s vehicle near the Rt. 198 exit on I-95 South in Laurel while that trooper was stopped and helping a driver. No one was hit.

Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, police said the suspect drove the Rogue past a D.C. police officer close to DC 295 near Exit 1 and shot the door of the officer’s vehicle before driving away. Police said the officer was not injured.

A short time later, Carroll said police were able to locate the Rogue in New Carrollton where the officer-involved shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m.

The crime spree concluded at around 4:30 a.m., the New Carrollton Police Department (NCPD) said the shooting, involving two of its officers, occurred near a laundromat at 7575 Annapolis Road. NCPD said the man was taken into custody and to the hospital, where he later died.
