Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition)

Taylor Swift

Republic • 2023

Lyrically, it reminds me of the scribbled journal of a self-sabotaging female with BPD. The music has a more chill wave, electronica, dream pop vibe to it than previous releases. I guess they’re calling lo-fi pop “bedroom pop” now, due to the proliferation of DIY indie music on social media. Not sure why her music is being viewed as bedroom pop. Oh, wait. It was released in cassette format, stop the presses, it must be DIY. It’s actually an okay album. Swift is still a force to be reckoned with within the confines of industrialized, commercial music.

This is the third iteration of the original album, Midnights, which was originally released in October of last year. I guess the subsequent releases after the original, Midnights (3AM Edition) and Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition), are addendums.

It sounds like her production team was like “Ok, think Kate Bush, “Running Up That Hill”. It did great on Stranger Things. Let’s also run it into the ground.” As far as the songs specifically, “Snow on The Beach” with Lana Del Rey is decent. “You’re on Your Own Kid” could’ve been ghost written by Tegan and Sara. “Vigilante Shit” is a minimalist ‘bad bitch anthem’ that is pretty decent as far as its memorability. Her tickets run at $1,300 on average. God bless America.
