Texas Governor Announces 2,300-Bed Military Base at Seized Border Park

While the imposition of Federal sanctuary policy looms across the U.S. border, Governor Greg Abbott has staked his claim on Shelby Park as home to a new, state-of-the-art, U.S. military base. Despite threats from the DHS, who claim that Texas is acting unconstitutionally in blocking U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s access to Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, the Lone Star State has yet to capitulate.

“Texas’s actions are clearly unconstitutional and are actively disrupting the federal government’s operations,” DHS General Counsel Jonathan Meyer wrote to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. “We demand that Texas cease and desist its efforts to block Border Patrol’s access in and around the Shelby Park area and remove all barriers to access in the Shelby Park area.”

Against the city’s wishes, state troopers have seized full control of Shelby Park on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande. A territory that has now become the epicenter of a state and federal showdown. The 2.5-mile area has been secured with barriers and concertina wire and has been staffed with Texas National Guard troops.

The Biden administration has sued the state of Texas over a law that would give new authority to local police to crack down on those suspected of entering the country illegally.

Senate Bill 4, which Gov. Greg Abbott signed in December, is Texas’ latest attempt to try to deter people from crossing the Rio Grande after several years of historic numbers of migrants, arriving at the Texas-Mexico border.

Officials expect that by mid-April they’ll have a 300-bed capacity and will add another 300 each month until completion. Ultimately, the new ‘base camp’ could house up to 2,300 soldiers.

Texas Maj. Gen. Thomas Suelzer, Abbott’s top military adviser, said at a press conference last Friday that the camp will include several features like large dining halls, individual rooms for soldiers, and medical care facilities.
