Oprah’s Faith Healer Sentenced to an Additional 99 Years for Rape

The self-proclaimed faith healer known as “John of God” was arrested on allegations of rape and sexual abuse in December of 2018. João Teixeira de Faria has faced accusations from hundreds of women, who allege he sexually abused them while they were seeking spiritual guidance and treatment. The charges were originally accepted by Rosângela Rodrigues dos Santos, a Brazilian judge of Abadiânia, centrally located in the country.

When he was first convicted, all of his multiple sentences were added up and his time behind bars resulted to 270 years and four months. After almost five years since his arrest, ‘John of God’ was found guilty on Monday, and charged with an additional sentence of 99 years. This brought up his prison time to 370 years, 9 months and 15 days.

Faria claimed to be able to cure a wide range of illnesses, and even said he could perform miraculous surgeries with his hands and without the need of anesthesia.

This incident harkens back to 2007 where Oprah Winfrey’s South African school for disadvantaged girls became a hotbed for rape and child molestation. A dormitory matron at the school was charged with 13 separate accounts of abuse, including indecent assault and criminal injury commited against at least six students aged 13 to 15.

Dutch choreographer Zahira Maus, 34, told TV Globo she had gone to Faria’s center seeking a cure for sexual trauma. However, once there, he took her into a private room and made her perform sexual acts on him. After this, she said he gave her a gemstone and told her to leave. On another occasion, Maus said Faria raped her. She said she did’nt come forward originally out of fear. “We don’t have to feel ashamed. He needs to feel ashamed,” she said.
