AMD’s CUDA Killer

In an attempt to disrupt Nvidia’s growing dominance in the GPU market, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. has unveiled plans for an open source rival to CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture), Nvidia’s flagship device architecture and API that revolutionized the realm of graphics computing with its parallel computational elements. The Q4 2023 earnings report showed strong growth for AMD, particularly in the Data Center segment, indicating potential for future market share growth.

Nvidia noticed major growth last year with the release of the release of the Nvidia DGX GH200, a terabyte-class supercomputer designed to handle massive reminder systems, generative AI, and graph analytics.

To combat NVIDIA’s dominance, AMD plans to use their open-source software alternatives on top of their new MI300 series APU, to attract companies looking for other options. With the AI GPU Data center market currently projected to grow to $400 Bn by 2027, AMD staked claim on this unique opportunity to create new open-source solutions will help them strengthen their market share to Nvidia, therefore continuing to present themselves as a strong buy for investors (rating upgrade).
